Week 24, Day 1

Who: Marco and Rin
Status: Closed
Style: Action, present tense
Where: Mizusato, in their home
When: Week 24, day 1
Rating: PG? PG-13? WHO KNOWS.
Warnings: Marco.

[ Turning into a kid has its whiplashes. One minute, you are innocent and bam! Not so innocent. Well, as innocent as kids can be. Marco knows for a fact that kids can be cruel, so it's more of a matter of temperament, really. Though what kind of kid tortures ants? Not that Marco is sympathetic to ants. It's something he notices but doesn't really care about. Not really. If he cared about a lot more things, he would've been like Cassie. Or crazy. Or both. (One has to shudder at the though.)

Even so, Marco has to count his blessings. Nothing horrible has happened while they were kids (yet), and considering the last time Marco got turned into a little kid, this is an improvement.

A better improvement.

Although little-him totally trashed his own room. Wow, it's a bit amazing that little-him is worse at making messes than current-him.

Probably comes from the fact that Marco is used to make tighter, more controlled messes for the Yeerks to clean up. He pulls his little wall of pillows into a pile, gathering them up. ]

[Ever since she's back to her normal, adult self, Rin has been feeling vaguely morose. There are the memories that particular event brings up, though really, those aren't so bad. Because after all, everything went well this time, and she can look back and say to herself: not again. It's just that, of course, she would prefer not to have anything like that to look back on at all.

But it's been a year, and she finds that she's okay, mostly. Is she getting better at dealing with things? Perhaps. Whether it's simple growing up or becoming more jaded, she's dealing.

Then there's that other thing. The thing where, once back to normal, she found herself surrounded by one person less. Yet. Manji had been whisked away, nowhere to be found, and his symbol was gone from the Hitomi.

Gone. Like all the other ones. These past few months felt like people dropping off the face of the Earth, one after another. Rin feels herself bereaved. It's connections being severed here, and a lot of people who have been in Kannagara for a long time have left -- Kakashi, Iruka too. Makes her feel almost like the Last Man Standing.

Almost, because Marco is still there. He's still there, but the longer she thinks about it, the more afraid she gets it won't stay that way. And if he leaves, she knows she'll regret it, because there are so many things left unsaid. So many connections they never did make. So many depths to be unearthed, because she does feel a little like she's always just staying on the surface. With Marco, with everybody.

And it eats her up inside.

It's with this thought that she walks through the house looking for him, almost frantically, and finally arrives at his room.

Deep breath (why is she nervous?), and she knocks on the wooden door.]

[ Marco looks up, and thinks, Oh. ]

Come in.

[ He picks up several robes that were tied together into a makeshift rope He's trying to remember why decide a rope made out of clothing was in order. He's pretty sure Mary Poppins was involved in the logic somehow. ]

[Taking another breath, Rin does as asked -- and stills when she sees the scene. She immediately makes the connection, because it's not like she wasn't a fervently rambunctious and imaginative child, herself.

Besides, she remembers the days before.

That puts a smile on her face, and makes her laugh quietly with a hand raised to her mouth.]

Dealing with the aftermath, I see?
Jun. 4th, 2011 08:23 pm (UTC)
Um, yeah. I forgot just how much of a wild child I used to be. Good memories. How about you? Played with dolls, or did you went outside and made mud cakes for dinner?

[ He got one knot and tries to untie it with limited success. Jeez, he must have pretended to be a sailor - he never knew he used to be so good at knots. With a little wiggling, he lessens the knot until the sleeves were free. ]

[Still smiling, she walks up and crouches down next to him.]

Both, I guess? And when I was a little older, I liked playing detective a lot... I made up the weirdest stories.

[Bit of a laugh, nostalgic. Then she looks to him.]

Want some help with that?
Jun. 4th, 2011 08:34 pm (UTC)
When I was older I . . .

[ Took care of my depressed dad? ]

Hmmm. Hang out with my friend Jake. Played video games a lot.

[ He looks at the robes-made-rope and then looks up again. ]

If you got sailor's hands, sure.
Jun. 5th, 2011 02:24 pm (UTC)
"Video games", huh...

[She has only a vague idea of what those are, but doesn't ask. Instead, she gives Marco another smile, then surveys the ropes.]

Hmm, maybe...

[And then she takes one knot and starts working on it. It takes her a moment, but it comes off fairly easily.]

There you go!
Jun. 6th, 2011 06:55 pm (UTC)
[Good thing she doesn't ask, because Marco would drive himself crazy just explaining the concept of a video game, so he's grateful that she hasn't pursue the topic.]

[He gives her a glance, and he wonders.]

While I was playing cowboys and Indians by myself, what did you do when you turned young?
Jun. 13th, 2011 01:27 pm (UTC)
[Looks into the air, kind of pensive.]

Not that much. It was... quiet. Ma-- [Ah, but here is where she swallows, trying to keep the pang of I miss Manji away.] Manji watched me, and Alice invited me to her house.

Where I then insulted all the other children.

[A bit of a laugh, and she looks back at him.]

Did you do okay?
Jun. 15th, 2011 02:43 am (UTC)
What did you do, tell them that their ears are too big?

[ Marco shrugs. He honestly doesn't remember much this time around - probably because his imagination was so crazy. ]

I did fine. Kinda shut myself in this room, which is probably an improvement last time, when I pretty much ran around in the woods.

[ Thank god for the Hitomi, or otherwise he might have gotten lost. Not that it matters, though. ]

Where is he now? Your bodyguard Manji?

[ Weird to think of him as her bodyguard. But then again, didn't Marco acted as a bodyguard of sorts in the few months they were together? ]
Jun. 15th, 2011 08:16 am (UTC)
I told them they looked weird. Which some of them apparently were really sensitive about.

[Quiet laugh, and that pensive look again.]

He left. I mean, he went home, I'm sure.

[Looks at the ground, slumping her shoulders.]

Everyone's leaving...
Jun. 15th, 2011 04:09 pm (UTC)
[ Yeah, Marco notices there's been a string of that lately. But it has happened before, so it's not like its surprising. He keeps his reservations, so that way should anyone he's been closer than usual, it won't feel that bad when they disappear.

Maybe it'll be better for Rin to not be so close to everyone. Or something. Being here so long, Marco really doesn't know what is really right thing to anymore when it comes to things like this. ]

Yeah. I lost friends here too.

Best thing we can do is to keep trucking.
Jun. 15th, 2011 06:49 pm (UTC)
[It's not like she got very close to many people -- both those that she did? Really hurts. And she can't not get close to people, for she hates being alone.]

I know. It just... gets lonely sometimes.

[Half-consciously leaning in onto his shoulder lightly.]
Jun. 15th, 2011 09:12 pm (UTC)
[ Woah. Um. Okay. Marco isn't complaining about it, though. He'll just allow her to do it. ]

Yeah, I know the feeling.

[ Normally? He doesn't like talking about feelings. It takes away the issue at hand, and Cassie is better at personal intuition than he is - he's all about the cold hard facts and the cold hard ways to get around a problem. That's how it works.

But there aren't any cold facts other than "people disappear". They do. Rin has. Marco has. One day, Marco will wake up and find Rin gone, poof, without her Hitomi like last time. Or maybe she will find him gone, no osprey will come to the window anymore, no more jokes through private thought-speak. That's cold facts right there.

Truth? That's an entirely different thing right there. ]

But if we allow that to really get to us - as in, really cripple us - then ultimately, there's no point. We're a part of something we will never remember in the end, but we still gotta find something better for ourselves.

And as for me, [ Marco jerks his head to the side and his lips quirk into a smile. ] I rather go out laughing.
Jun. 15th, 2011 09:35 pm (UTC)
[She looks up at him and laughs quietly again.]

Yeah, you would.

[Then she looks back at the ground, takes another of the knots and starts to work at it.]

Mmmh, I know. I know these things.

Doesn't make it easy or pleasant.
